The new space race is a supply chain race
The first space race was won with exquisite machines built by the thousands of hands of a mobilized state. The new one will be won by whoever can put capable mass on orbit faster than an adversary can take it off. That is not a rocket problem anymore. Launch costs have fallen two orders of magnitude; the manifest is booked. The bottleneck moved upstream — to everything that has to be on the rocket.
Proliferated architectures only deter if they can actually proliferate. A constellation designed to survive attrition assumes you can replace attrition, and replacement is a supply chain question: radiation-tolerant compute, space-qualified optics, propulsion, solar, and the unglamorous fasteners and boards that all currently flow through a handful of small suppliers — some of them with one shy of a single point of failure, some of them owned by people we would rather they weren't.
Meanwhile orbit itself has become contested terrain. Space domain awareness, maneuver without regret, and on-orbit refueling stop being science projects and start being the logistics train of the high ground. Every one of them is, underneath the physics, a manufacturing and cadence problem.
Orbit is won on the factory floor, one qualified component at a time.
So a serious space thesis is quietly an industrial thesis. The constellation operators matter — but the layer below them matters just as much: component makers scaling from tens to thousands of units, test infrastructure that compresses qualification from years to weeks, and software that makes a satellite factory run like an automotive line.
The scoreboard in this race is not who flies the most impressive mission. It is who can rebuild their constellation faster than the other side can kill it. That is a supply chain number — and right now it is nobody's to brag about. The founders fixing it are the ones we want to meet.
